Keep the cold out and the money in

The winter season is here, and that spells high heating bills for many people across the country. Here are some simple things you can have done to your home to help stop the frigid air from coming in, and your money going out.

Two of the biggest places for heat loss are the doors and windows. Even if you have had your windows replaced in the last five years, you may still be losing heat. The good news is that it is fairly inexpensive to have a Handyman replace the caulking around the sides. If you have older wood windows, it may be a little harder. The first thing you should do is to make sure the windows close together and that the locks work. The locks help pull the windows together and create an air seal. If the windows do not line up, you can have a Carpenter sand the bottom to create a better seal. Also look at the window putty; you may have some gaps around the glass. The best way to find air leaks is use your hand to feel for cold air.

If you have storm windows, you can also add new caulking around the side to help with heat loss. Also have a look at the top to see if the window is fully closed.

Other potential areas for heat loss are doors and storm doors. This is another very simple fix - just add weather stripping around the side of the door frame. If the door is not level, you can have a Carpenter fix it.

If you have bulkhead doors coming out from the basement like this one, make sure there are no gaps. You can also have a Handyman add rubber weather stripping.

Now that the doors and windows are weatherproofed, it’s time to move on to the inside of your home. Every house has light fixtures and electrical sockets that may have air leaks. You can have your Handyman add pre-cut foam gaskets that go over the electrical plugs to stop heat loss. You can also have them spray foam into any gaps. Below is a list of other places you may want to check.
  • Foundation Walls
  • Recessed Lights
  • Attic Hatches
  • Floor Joists
  • Plumbing Vents
  • Wiring Holds
