Is Your Home Safe?

More than 3,500 Americans die each year in fires, and approximately 20,000 are injured. The United States Fire Administration (USFA) believes that having a sound escape plan will greatly reduce fire deaths and will protect you and your family's safety if a fire occurs. Heating is the number two cause of fires in Massachusetts, causing more than 14,000 fires over the past year. Use your heating system wisely. Take a look at the list below to see if you home is safe.

- Make sure that you have a smoke alarm on each level of your house.

- Test your smoke alarms once a month and change batteries twice a year.

- Hold home fire drills to practice your fire escape plan.

- Keep doorways clear.

- Teach your kids how to call 911.

- Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. (Call your local fire department to determine the right type for your home).

- Teach your kids not to play with matches.

- Routinely check your electrical appliances’ wiring.

- Frayed wires cause fires. Replace all worn or damaged wires immediately.

- Do not overload extension cords or plugs.

- Have your furnace professionally cleaned.

- If you have a fireplace, have the chimney cleaned.

- When using the fireplace, always use the screen.

- If you use a space heater, always keep the surrounding area clear for three feet.

- Do not allow kids to play around any electrical appliances.

- If a plug has three prongs, do not cut one of them off.
